A professional photo session is a guided studio shoot with real lighting, professional make-up and images composed individually – not a thousand frames rapid-fired and left for you to sort out. At BEAUTYSHOTS Hamburg a session lasts 30–60 minutes, includes professional make-up on most packages, produces 50–80 individually composed images and starts at €79. Our studio is in Hamburg-Altona (Beerenweg 1E) and rated 4.9 out of 5 stars on Google; in Hamburg we have welcomed more than 25,000 customers since 2004.
That difference matters more than most people expect. Anyone can trigger a shutter hundreds of times and hope a few frames land. A professional session is the opposite: our photographer directs the light, the angle and your pose for each shot, so the good image is planned – not left to chance. This guide explains what actually makes a session professional, how to recognise a good studio, what it costs and how to prepare.
How to recognise a professional photo studio
A professional photo studio combines controlled studio lighting, an experienced photographer, a make-up artist and a private, unhurried atmosphere – and it shows you the results together on screen instead of handing over a memory card. These are the quality signals worth checking before you book anywhere in Hamburg.
- Real studio lighting. Professional light shapes a face and flatters skin. A studio that relies on a window and a phone is not a studio.
- An experienced photographer who directs you. You should never have to know how to pose. Our photographer guides every position, so first-timers look natural without any camera experience.
- A make-up artist with professional products. Professional make-up (brands such as MAC) evens skin tone and holds up under studio light. Note: we do make-up, not hairstyling.
- A private, closed atmosphere. No walk-in traffic, no waiting room full of strangers – just you and the team. This is especially important for Beauty, boudoir and nude sessions.
- A shared image review on screen. You look through the shots together with us right after the session and choose your favourites. Nothing is decided behind your back.
- Honest, upfront pricing. A session fee you can see before you arrive – not a vague price revealed only at pickup.
Put simply: professional means image quality, personal attention and a calm setting – the opposite of cheap mass production. We compose every frame individually rather than firing off 1,000 near-identical shots and calling it a day.
How a professional session works, step by step
A professional photo session at BEAUTYSHOTS Hamburg runs in five clear stages: make-up, the shoot, a shared image review, your selection, and digital delivery in full resolution. Here is what each stage looks like.
- Make-up (about 20–35 minutes). Our make-up artist prepares your look with professional products so your skin reads well under studio light. This is where you settle in and relax before the camera comes out.
- The shoot (about 30–60 minutes). Our photographer guides your posing and expression frame by frame, producing 50–80 individually composed images. You do not need any experience – we lead, you follow.
- The shared review. Right after the shoot we look through the images together on screen. You see the real results immediately, not a curated teaser.
- Your selection. You pick the images you love. There is no obligation to buy a package – additional images are optional and chosen after the shoot.
- Retouching and delivery. Your chosen images are edited individually – small blemishes smoothed, tone refined, always keeping you looking like you – and delivered digitally in full resolution.
When a professional photo session is worth it
A professional session pays off whenever the image needs to represent you well – a job application, a dating profile, a milestone, or simply a portrait you are proud of. We shoot a wide range of categories, each with its own approach.
- Beauty – close, flattering portraits that put your face and make-up centre stage. See our Beauty session.
- Business and application photos – clean, confident headshots for LinkedIn, CVs and company profiles. See our Business session.
- Portrait – a timeless, personal portrait for any occasion. See our Portrait session.
- Couples – two people, real connection, relaxed direction. See our Couples session.
- Family and maternity – warm images that hold a moment in time. See our Family session.
- Model and sedcard – a professional set for agencies and castings. See our Model/sedcard session.
- Nude and erotic – tasteful, body-positive images in a fully private setting. See our Nude/erotic session.
Is a professional portrait worth it for online dating? Yes – a well-lit, natural portrait reads as approachable and genuine, and it consistently outperforms a cropped selfie. The same portrait works just as well on a business profile. A session also makes a genuinely personal gift for someone who would never book one for themselves.
What a professional photo session costs in Hamburg
At BEAUTYSHOTS Hamburg session fees start at €79, with application photos from €49 and larger formats priced higher. The session fee is paid upfront and secures your slot, make-up and shoot; the images you then choose are optional, with no obligation to buy.
- From €49 – application photos
- €79 – Beauty, Couples, Family, Portrait, maternity, model/sedcard and nude/erotic
- €149 – Business, and indoor JGA (hen party) sessions
- €199–299 – outdoor JGA sessions
Make-up is included on most packages; where it is an optional add-on it is €25. All chosen images are delivered digitally in full resolution. For the full breakdown see our prices and packages and the guide what a photo session costs.
What does a single image cost? Because you only pick what you love after the shoot, there is no fixed per-image charge to memorise – you decide how many images you want once you have seen them, and you are never pushed to take a package you do not need.
How to prepare for your session
A little preparation makes a noticeable difference. None of it is complicated – a few small choices help you look and feel your best in front of the camera.
- Arrive without make-up – our make-up artist starts from a clean base.
- Bring 2–3 outfits so we can vary the look.
- Avoid tight elastic marks from bras or socks shortly before the shoot.
- Wash your hair the day of or the day before.
- Choose solid colours over busy patterns – they photograph more cleanly.
- Iron anything that creases easily.
What should you wear? Clothes you feel confident in, in solid tones, with a couple of alternatives to switch things up. Nervous in front of the camera? That is completely normal, and it is exactly why we direct every pose – most people relax within the first few minutes. Bring your own ideas, too: if you have a mood, a reference or a specific look in mind, tell us and we will build it into the session. And yes, expression can be planned – our photographer coaches your posture, chin and eyes so the feeling you want actually lands. For more on outfits, see our outfit guide.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a photo session professional?
A professional photo session uses controlled studio lighting, an experienced photographer who guides your posing, professional make-up and images composed individually rather than mass-produced. At BEAUTYSHOTS Hamburg it runs 30–60 minutes, includes a shared on-screen review and delivers images in full digital resolution.
Is make-up included, and is hairstyling part of it?
Professional make-up is included on most packages, applied by our make-up artist with professional products. Hairstyling is not part of the session, so arrive with your hair the way you would like it worn. Where make-up is an optional add-on, it costs €25.
What does a professional photo session cost in Hamburg?

Do I need experience in front of the camera?
No. Our photographer directs every pose, angle and expression, so complete first-timers look natural and relaxed. Most people settle in within the first few minutes, and feeling nervous beforehand is completely normal.
How many images do I get?
A session produces 50–80 individually composed images. You review them together with us on screen straight after the shoot and choose your favourites. Chosen images are retouched individually and delivered digitally in full resolution.
How does image selection work – is there an obligation to buy?
After the shoot you view all the images with us and select only the ones you love. There is no obligation to buy a package – additional images are optional and decided after the session, so you are never pushed into a purchase.
What should I wear?
Bring 2–3 outfits in solid colours rather than busy patterns, and choose clothes you feel confident in. Avoid tight elastic marks from bras or socks beforehand, and iron anything that creases. Arrive without make-up so our make-up artist can start from a clean base.
Is a professional portrait good for a business profile or online dating?
Yes. A professionally lit, naturally directed portrait reads as confident and authentic, which works equally well on LinkedIn, a CV or a dating profile. It consistently makes a stronger impression than a cropped phone selfie.
